The State Bar of Texas admitted him to practice that same year, and he is also admitted to practice before the U.S. District Court for the Northern, Eastern and Western Districts of Texas as well as the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 5th Circuit and U.S. Court of Military Appeals.

The son of an air force fighter pilot, Mr. Cartwright joined the air force himself and reached the rank of Captain. While serving his country, he was in the Judge Advocate General Corps for four years, handling over 40 jury trials and winning the Meritorious Service Medal and the Air Force Trial Advocacy Award.

Regarded as a leader in his field, Mr. Cartwright has numerous publications to his credit, and he maintains an active involvement with various local, state and national bar associations, including serving as past president of the Denton County Bar Association.
